Ministry has wings… and bonds of love, too

Rigo with Pastor Roberto and youth group in Mexico City.
Rigo with Pastor Roberto, his wife, Tabita, and youth group in Mexico City, around 1993. Can you find me?

This is a very special week. I am going to Chicago to minister with my violin music at a pastoral convention. I have been invited by my former pastor, Roberto Flores, who I had the fortune to work for as the church music minister, back in the 1990’s. In those years, the Flores family extended a kind of hospitality to me that you rarely see today.

I was going through music school at that time and I spent most of my “free” time ministering in the church, being a youth group leader, leading bible studies, conducting services, and preaching. It was a very unique and exciting time. The Flores family made my musical ministry possible, and, most of all, I learned from them what a minister really is: sacrifice, dedication, perseverance, compassion, and, above everything, love.

Mid-West-apostolic-conventionIt will be a great adventure, as I am reminded about the apostolic letters from Paul, encouraging Timothy and the other young ministers in the trenches. The good thing about their mentoring was that I was living next door to brother Roberto and sister Tabita –literally, in the church parsonage. You learn what’s in their heart, how they think, how they minister, what true ministers’ motivation is: love.

If I can say that I owe much to any family (besides the Lord Jesus and my own parents), Roberto and Tabita Flores will be first on that list, for sure.

I will forever be thankful for their generosity, as well as indebted to them for all that I learned from them. Praise be to God, who allowed me to learn from some of the best people on earth.

Brother Roberto and sister Tabita: May the Lord continue to bless you in your ministry growth.

I love you!

-Rigo

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.
~ Hebrews 13:7

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them.”
~ Ecclesiastes 12:1

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
~ 1 Timothy 4:12

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
~ 1 Peter 5:5-9

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the LORD, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.
~ Jeremiah 29:11-14

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 4:10

Here is a little piece of inspiration for this Easter Season: Via Dolorosa (performed on violin by Rigo Murillo).

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

– Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

Dear Christian: Be Who You Are!

f28fa-image8Do not forget that our old sinful lives were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. We have set free from the power of sin. And since we dies with Christ, we will also share his new life. So consider yourself dead to sin and able to live for the glory of God through Jesus Christ. You do not have to let sin control the way you live. Do not give into its lustful desires! Use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God. Remember, sin is no longer your master.

The Blessings of Obedience

If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
– Deuteronomy 28:1          —-  (Scroll down for the entire passage)

Deuteronomy-28-1

Deuteronomy 28:1-14 (NIV)

28:1 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.

2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.

4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.

7 The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.

8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lordyour God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him.

10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you.

11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.

13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lordyour God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.

14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.
